Diversity Awareness Workshop

“THE ART OF ASSIGNING TOGETHER”

GOALS OF A DIVERSITY AWARENESS WORKSHOP

  • To facilitate the process of transformation at Gansbaai Academia
  • To introduce and raise the awareness to promote a multicultural perspective in achieving an inclusive democracy

THE OBJECTIVE OF A DIVERSITY AWARENESS WORKSHOP

  • To attend to the wants and expectations of the participants
  • To allow the participants to experience and reflect on some of their first contacts with people from other racial/ethnic groups and the messages they received during those contacts
  • To allow the participants to reflect on and share how they want to be identified and what class they grew up in
  • To help participants work through their past hurts, misinformation and feelings
  • To share the importance of feelings as messengers
  • To encourage participants to appreciate each other and experience an enhancement of self-esteem
  • To share a definition of culture and talk about the culture in the school
  • To introduce and share the worldview differences and discuss the implications of these differences in school and life
  • To introduce the concept of old fashioned racism, modern racism, internalised white racism and other forms of internalised oppression
  • To introduce the concepts of old fashioned sexism, modern sexism, and internalised sexism
  • To apply these theories and suggest alternative behaviours, by focusing on some recent interaction that felt difficult, unresolved and dysfunctional
  • To encourage the reading of relevant articles
  • To encourage participants to develop plans of action
