Gansbaai Academia, although a brand new school, is fast establishing traditions for the future. One of which is the induction of the grade eights into high school. The 2013 function was held in the afternoon and evening of 18 November 2013. Ms Liezel Mostert was the compere throughout the event and did a brilliant job in keeping the function running smoothly, although she did need the help of her dog in the evening! Continue reading
The Gansbaai Courant published an article in their issue of 10 January, 2012 detailing the proud achievement of our 2012 matriculants under the headline of “Academia Matrieks Skitter“. The same issue also contained letters of congratulation by the Deputy Mayor, Clr Pieter Scholtz, and warrant officer C Le Roux who congratulated the school’s learners and staff on behalf of the Gansbaai SAPS.
Academia ‘s matric class of 2012, the first in the history of the school, set a very high benchmark for the future. Forty-seven of the the original 54 learners entered for the exam passed . Three learners did not complete the exam giving an overall pass rate of 92.1%. The top 2 students were Michelle lê Roux, who also achieved 3 distinctions, and Michelle Hayes. Continue reading
Although the fledgling library opened its doors less than three months ago, many donations have already been received.
The latest donation came from Deon Meyer, the popular South African author who donated a set of his books to the library. Deon signed each book individually. Popular Mechanics also donated a year’s free subscription to their magazine. This is in conjunction with a donation of a year’s subscription to Oprah and Car magazines by an anonomous donor.Two Kindle ebook readers were taken into use by the library in December. Numerous books and magazines were received from donors all over Gansbaai including the deputy Mayor Pieter Scholtz and his wife, Ans.
Donations like this greatly assist the library in its aim to improve and cultivate literacy and a love of reading amongst the Academia learners, but there is still a long road ahead before it can compete with the best school libraries. So please keep on helping!
Siviwe Yuyu has been chosen as head boy for 2013 with Bianca de Koning as the head girl. Both Siviwe and Bianca are part of the Rachel’s Angels and are among the top academic achievers for 2012. Continue reading
The school’s new library was officially opened on Thursday 6 September 2012 during a function attended by local and other dignitaries. This special milestone for the school was achieved after long and tireless work behind the scenes. Two of the school’s staff, Carlien Fortuin and Carla Gouws were responsible for the organisation of the opening and their hard work ensured a very successful function. Continue reading
